Could Your Bank Help Pay for Solar Panels, Battery Storage or a Heat Pump?
If you are planning to install solar panels, battery storage or a heat pump, it may be worth checking whether your mortgage provider offers cashback for eligible energy-efficiency improvements.
Halifax, Lloyds Bank and Barclays currently have cashback schemes for qualifying residential mortgage customers. Depending on the lender, the improvement and the current offer terms, the reward may be worth up to £2,000.
Halifax Green Living Reward
Qualifying Halifax mortgage customers could currently claim:
- £2,000 cashback for installing an eligible heat pump
- £1,000 cashback for rooftop solar panels or a non-portable home battery
- £500 cashback for certain other eligible energy-efficiency improvements
To qualify, customers must generally have completed a qualifying Halifax mortgage, additional borrowing or mortgage deal switch.
They then normally have one year from completing that mortgage transaction to complete one eligible improvement and submit a claim with a final invoice showing that the work has been paid for or that an agreed payment plan is in place.
The property must be occupied by the mortgage customer as their home, so buy-to-let properties are excluded. Only one improvement can normally be claimed for each qualifying mortgage, additional borrowing or new deal.

Lloyds Bank Eco Home Reward
Lloyds Bank currently advertises the following rewards for qualifying mortgage customers:
- £2,000 cashback for an eligible heat-pump installation
- £500 cashback for certain other eligible energy-efficiency improvements
Other eligible improvements may include solar panels, battery storage and insulation, but customers should check the current Lloyds terms to confirm that their chosen improvement qualifies.
The heat-pump reward may be available when using Octopus Energy or another installer that meets Lloyds’ accreditation and technical requirements.
Customers should access the Lloyds Eco Home Journey and confirm their eligibility and registration requirements before arranging or starting any work.

Barclays Greener Home Reward
Barclays provides a one-time cashback reward to qualifying residential mortgage customers who complete certain renewable-energy improvements.
Current reward amounts include:
- £1,000 for an eligible air-source heat pump, ground-source heat pump or biomass pellet boiler
- £500 for eligible solar photovoltaic panels, solar battery storage or solar thermal
Barclays requires the applicant to have an eligible residential mortgage, pay the mortgage by Direct Debit, be up to date with their payments and meet the remaining offer conditions.
For renewable-energy installations requiring an MCS certificate, the work must be completed by an appropriately certified installer. Barclays currently states that the claim should normally be submitted within three months of the date shown on the MCS certificate.
Customers should check the current certificate, invoice and installer requirements before arranging the work.

Can cashback be used alongside a government grant?
Lender cashback may sometimes be available alongside government support such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, but this depends on the lender’s terms and the specific installation. Customers should confirm that the cashback and grant can be combined and that the same costs are not being funded twice.
What will you normally need when claiming?
Requirements differ between lenders and technologies, but customers may be asked to provide:
- Mortgage and property details
- A final invoice showing the eligible work completed
- Evidence that the invoice has been paid or details of an agreed payment plan
- The installer’s name and address
- An MCS certificate or other required certification for relevant technologies
- Evidence that the installer meets the lender’s accreditation requirements
- A claim submitted within the lender’s deadline
Some lenders require customers to register or check their eligibility before work begins. Completing the installation first and checking afterwards could mean discovering that an important eligibility or registration requirement has been missed.
